Remembering Louise Hay

Remembering Louise Hay

I heard the news of Louise Hay’s passing yesterday via a post on a friend’s Facebook page.  Social media is my main source of news these days, but I always verify the authenticity.  Sadly, this news was true & I have seen many tribute posts on my newsfeed since.

Here’s an excerpt from the official press release:

Our beloved friend and founder Louise Hay transitioned this morning, August 30, 2017 of natural causes at age 90. She passed peacefully in her sleep.

Louise was an incredible visionary and advocate. Everyone who had the privilege to meet her, either in person or through her words, felt her passion for serving others.

Considered a founder of the self-help movement, Louise was dubbed “the closest thing to a living saint.” She published her first book, Heal Your Body, in 1976 (at age 50) long before it was fashionable to discuss the connection between the mind and body.

Louise was able to put her philosophies into practice when she was diagnosed with cancer. She considered the alternatives to surgery and drugs, and instead developed an intensive program of affirmations, visualization, nutritional cleansing, and psychotherapy. Within six months, she was completely healed of cancer.

In 1980, Louise began putting her workshop methods on paper. In 1984, her second book, You Can Heal Your Life, was published. In it, Louise explained how our beliefs and ideas about ourselves are often the cause of our emotional problems and physical maladies and how, by using certain tools, we can change our thinking and our lives for the better.

You Can Heal Your Life became a New York Times bestseller and spent 16 weeks on the list. More than 50 million copies of You Can Heal Your Life have been sold throughout the world.

In 1985, Louise began her famous support group, “The Hayride,” with six men diagnosed with AIDS. By 1988, the group had grown to a weekly gathering of 800 people and had moved to an auditorium in West Hollywood. Once again, Louise had started a movement of love and support long before people began to wear red ribbons on their lapels.

In 1987, what began as a small venture in the living room of her home turned into Hay House, Inc.: a successful publishing company that has sold millions of books and products worldwide and now has offices in California, New York, London, Sydney, Johannesburg, and New Delhi.

“Meeting Louise changed the direction of my life,” said Reid Tracy, President and CEO of Hay House, Inc.

“Her passion for serving others translated into everything she did. Simply by working alongside her, an analytical accountant like me transformed into someone who became aware of the power of affirmations and self-love. Being able to learn from her has been one of my life’s greatest blessings. The beauty of Louise was that you didn’t have to work alongside her to learn from her, you felt like you were there with her with every word you read or heard.”

Louise Hay’s estate, as well as all future royalties, will be donated to The Hay Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by Louise that financially supports diverse organizations supplying food, shelter, counseling, hospice care, and funds to those in need.

As Louise was 90 years old, her passing was not unfathomable, yet people of her stature seem to have this air of invincibility about them, as though they will always be present in our lives – just think back to 2015 where we were shocked to hear about the passing of another celebrity from our childhood/youth at least every month.  Louise Hay was not a rock star, nor a movie idol but she undoubtably touched the lives of millions of people around the world, either in person or via her writing.

I still remember the first time I bought her book, ‘You Can Heal Your Life‘.  I was in my teens, already aware of the limitations of modern medicine & becoming increasingly interested in natural healing.  There was this book people were talking about, a book with a beautiful rainbow heart splashed across the front cover, its pages promising healing & empowerment.  It was my introduction to the concept of affirmations and the mind-body connection to healing.  It is a book that still takes pride of place on the shelf, amongst others sorted by the colour of their spines to form a rainbow.

When I started Unity Wellness several months ago, I was looking for others to align with who shared my philosophy around health & wellbeing.  I came across Louise’s company, Hay House & discovered that she had published works by some other amazing people I’d admired for years such as Dr Christiane Northrup & Dr Wayne Dyer (also one of those people we lost in 2015).  It was a no-brainer to share their messages with my readers.

At that time, I also signed up for the Hay House newsletter to keep up-to-date with news & new releases.  One of the newsletters was promoting a summit they were running which brought together some of the top people in mind-body-spirit healing, but also featured ‘You Can Heal Your Life: The Movie‘ about Louise Hay’s life & how she became an accidental guru. It was truly inspiring & humbling to watch her story & how she helped those people that others wouldn’t or couldn’t.  I highly recommend watching it.

Even though she is no longer of this Earth, her legacy will live on for generations to come.  In many ways she was ahead of her time, yet her message is timeless.

Vale Louise Hay.

Thank you for doing your bit to advance humanity & reminding us all that we carry within us both what we need to remain sick and the power to be well.  The choice is ours.

Denmark Intends To Be The World’s FIRST 100% Organic Nation

Denmark Intends To Be The World’s FIRST 100% Organic Nation

The Danish government accumulated 53 million Euros in 2015 to transform the nation into an organic one.

Bhutan announced its plan to become the world’s first 100% organic nation in 2013, but it now has some competition. That’s right, Denmark’s government announced its plan to become Earth’s first 100% organic nation – and it has a solid plan of accomplishing that feat.

According to OrganicVeganEarth, the Scandinavian country is already the most developed country in the world concerning the amount of organic products it exports. In fact, the country’s national organic brand will soon celebrate its 25th year in business – making it one of the oldest organic brands in the world!

Since 2007, the Danish economy has been boosted by 200%, thanks to organic exports. Because the trend to opt for pesticide-free foods continues to increase, the government made the bold choice to accumulate 53 million Euros in 2015 to transform Denmark into an organic country.

Now, it’s only a matter of time before the nation achieves its goal. The government intends to tackle the task of turning Denmark into a 100% organic country by working on two different fronts. First, it will give a boost to turn traditional farmland into organic and stimulate increased demand for pesticide-free products.

In the 57-point document drafted by Økologiplan Danmark, it is explained that the aim is to double the agricultural land cultivated with organic methods by 2020. The Organic Action Plan for Denmark explains that the land belonging to the government will be cultivated using organic and biodynamic methods, and independent, small-scale farmers will also receive the finances and support to transform their own crops to be 100% organic (livestock included). Money will also be allotted to developing new technologies and ideas capable of promoting growth.

The second part involves promoting the nation’s transition to organic. All institutions in Denmark should be on board with promoting pesticide-free, biodynamically-grown crops and produce. The first target is to ensure that 60% of food served to the public is organic. Schools and hospitals are especially expected to respect the country’s initiative.

Let’s hope Denmark succeeds and sets an example for the rest of the world to follow! What are your thoughts? Please comment below and share this news!

Three Tips for Hormone Balance After 40

Three Tips for Hormone Balance After 40

As you approach your 40s, your reproductive years are starting to wind down, and that means changes in your hormones. These changes are inevitable, but the severity of your symptoms depends on your overall health and your knowledge of what is going on in your body and what to do about it.

Let’s review the hormonal changes that occur at peri-menopause and menopause, and then we’ll look at how to optimize your health and avoid weight gain, memory lapses, hot flashes, moodiness and insomnia.

Menopause is when your period stops altogether, and the average age for this is 51. But peri-menopause, a word rarely heard in our culture, is the 5-10 year period of hormonal fluctuation that leads to menopause. It is usually these years that are most challenging.

During peri-menopause, your ovaries are not functioning as well; this is a part of normal aging. But your brain still tries to keep the ovaries working, and some months it’s successful and you ovulate; sometimes it’s not and you don’t. The varying hormone levels that occur in these monthly attempts to keep cycling are what can cause symptoms.

Tip #1- Avoid Estrogen Dominance

The main hormone imbalance you’ll experience is called estrogen dominance. The amount of estrogen you have is higher relative to progesterone (progesterone is only produced in high quantities after a strong ovulation). Estrogen can be extra dominant when you are are getting xeno-estrogens from things like plastics and fragrances, or if you’re overweight, as fat tissue produces estrogen.

Estrogen dominance can lead to the dreaded heavy periods, frequent periods and mid-cycle spotting of peri-menopause.

You can do many things to reduce estrogen. Here are a few:

1. Avoid non-organic, processed foods, plastics and artificial fragrances that contain xeno-estrogens.

2. Eat a wide variety of fruit and vegetable fibers that nourish your good gut bacteria. Your gut helps you clear used estrogens! How many strange vegetables can you buy & try?

3. Manage your weight. An easy way to slim down is to avoid sugars in coffee drinks, alcoholic drinks and treats. Stick to it for a couple weeks and watch your muffin top melt!

Tip #2- Love On Your Adrenals

As your ovaries slow down and produce less hormone, ideally your adrenal glands will bridge the gap and keep you feeling well. But you’re likely stressed with working, managing a household, and perhaps raising kids or caring for elderly parents. This often means your adrenal glands have been overworked for years as you’ve lived in ‘flight or fight’ mode. So now it’s time to really love upon your adrenals!

Here’s how:

1. Get to sleep by 10 PM. There is a deeper level of restoration that happens when you are asleep in the hours before midnight. Try it each night for a week and notice your energy improve!

2. Get vitamin C. Your adrenal glands use a LOT of vitamin C, especially when you’re stressed or dealing with chronic inflammation, viruses, etc. You can use ½ lemon in water first thing in the morning and again in early afternoon. You can also
look for a supplement with vitamin C plus bioflavonoids, and take 1,000 mg /day twice a day, if you doctor approves.

3. Take rest breaks. Do you want a break? Of course you do! As women, we drive ourselves hard. But you have to take care of you; there is no one else in charge of your care. Try these two tips: After lunch, take a 10 minute lie down. Yes, lie down flat and just rest. If you work outside the home, maybe bring a yoga mat to work and find a quiet place, or go to your car. If it’s nice you can go lie outside. Then as your day closes, but before dinner, take your 10 minute lie down again. You can’t just read this, you really have to do it! You’ll feel the reset when you do take these short breaks.

Tip #3- Get A Good Night’s Rest

Many women have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, and sleep is super important at this time in life. We produce growth hormone as we sleep, and this growth hormone repairs and rebuilds us; sleep is the fountain of youth! So here are a few ideas if you’re having trouble:

1. If you are having trouble falling asleep because of a busy mind, take time to wind down at night. Read a book, take a stroll or take a bath. Avoid screens and turn down the lights around the house. If you still need help, try drinking a ½ teaspoon of nutmeg in warm almond milk a bit before bedtime. You’ll be surprised how sleepy it makes you!

2. For an aromatherapy approach, dab a few drops of pure vetiver and pure lavender oils under your nose and at your temples. Or use a cold mist diffuser to spread this goodness into your bedroom air.

3. If you wake up during the night, you can still try the above tips, and you may need to look at your blood sugar and liver function. You should be able to burn stored energy as you sleep. If you body can’t do this, your body will spike your energy levels to release blood sugar, and you’ll wake up.Be sure to avoid alcohol, sugar and high carbohydrate foods before bed. Try not to snack between meals and get plenty of healthy fat in your diet from coconut oil, raw nuts, avocados, grass-fed butter or ghee, etc. If you have a great diet, don’t snack, and go to bed early, waking up in the middle of the night may indicate a more complex problem. If your liver is working overtime at night to deal with parasites or other infections, it can’t manage your blood sugar at night as well. This is no diagnosis, just something to consider with your functional health practitioner!

Fresh or Fatal? How fragrances in the products you use every day could be making you sick…very sick.

Fresh or Fatal? How fragrances in the products you use every day could be making you sick…very sick.

What’s your favourite scent?

Maybe it’s the warm, rich tones of a chocolate cake baking in the oven?  Maybe it’s your signature oriental perfume or the aftershave that guy at work always wears?  Maybe it’s the vanilla bodywash that leaves you smelling like freshly-baked cookies or imagining you’re in a field of flowers as you wash your hair? Maybe it’s the lemony freshness of your favourite cleaning spray or toilet cleaner that reminds you of the smell of the pine Christmas tree from your childhood.  Whatever it is, there’s no doubt that fragrances carry strong associations with them – good & bad.  Our sense of smell is connected to the limbic area of our brain – the same area responsible for memories & emotions – and product manufacturers know just how powerful this connection is.  Often, the way something smells will determine if we’ll buy that product again.

Layers, Donkey!

Think for a moment about the products you use each day that are fragranced in some way, whether you use them on your body, in your home or at your workplace.  Here’s a list of things that the average person might use:

  • soap or body wash
  • shampoo & conditioner
  • hair styling products
  • deodorant
  • perfume / cologne / aftershave
  • skin care products
  • cosmetics
  • sunscreen
  • washing powder/liquid
  • fabric softener
  • kitchen cleaning products
  • bathroom cleaning products
  • air freshener (home/work/car) &/or scented candles

Most of those products will be scented.  If you read the ingredient list on the packaging, it may just say “fragrance” or “perfume”. Hmmmm, it’s just Apple & Berry Shampoo, right?  They must just use apple & berry extracts to make it smell like that? Sadly, not so much.

Say it 10 times fast: “Lax Labelling Laws”

One “fragrance” be created from any number of the 3100 chemicals used by the fragrance industry. Can you imagine how much room the products would take up in your home if the packaging was large enough to list each one of those ingredients?  Would you even buy the product if you knew how many chemicals were in there?  The manufacturers are only required to list “fragrance” or “perfume” as an ingredient.  The cosmetics industry (including fragrance manufacturers) is self-regulated & they are not legally obliged to list each component of the fragrance. There is also no requirement for these fragrances to be tested for human safety.  Now, while it’s unlikely that you’ll find all 3000+ chemicals in one fragrance, the average fragrance product tested contained 14 chemicals not listed on the label.  Multiply that by the number of scented products used each day & you can start to see the burden upon our bodies.

Phthalatest news

About 20 per cent of the population are allergic or sensitive to chemical fragrances. Symptoms can include a skin rash, hay fever, asthma, migraine, nausea, dizziness, fatigue or difficulty concentrating. These hypersensitivity reactions generally occur soon after exposure to the product, so it doesn’t take long to work out the trigger.

What’s more worrying are the longer-term effects these chemicals can have.  Many people these days are aware that BPA in plastics is not a good thing, so ‘BPA free’ has become a strong marketing point.  The main issue with BPA is phthalate (pronounced tha-late). Diethyl phthalate also happens to be one of the main ingredients in synthetic fragrances as it makes the fragrance longer-lasting.  It’s also a strong endocrine disruptor & a report by the WHO in 2012 showed links to early-onset puberty in girls, reproductive defects in boys (400% increase, mainly testicular issues), reduced sperm count in men (40% reduction), PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids & infertility. Around 70% of women have a hormonal disorder & 1 in 7 are classified as infertile.  Those who do get pregnant will detox via the foetus, as when fat stored on the mother’s body goes to the foetus for growth, it takes with it all the fat-soluble chemicals stored within.

Weight a minute…

Not only are we seeing unprecedented rates of endocrine disorders, cancers, autoimmune disorders & neurological issues, rates of obesity continue to rise.  Do you know how the body locks away excess chemicals that it can’t quickly excrete?  It stores them in fat cells.  And not the type of fat that’s easily converted to energy; the type that will maintain its integrity the longest to keep us safe.

Did you know that body fat is not inert?  It acts as an endocrine organ & interacts with the rest of the endocrine system to affect hunger, satiety, blood sugar regulation & general metabolism. Research suggests different obesogenic compounds may have different mechanisms of action, some affecting the number of fat cells, others the size of fat cells, and still others the hormones that affect appetite, satiety, food preferences, and energy metabolism.  Some obesogenic effects may pass on to later generations through epigenetic changes that affect when and how genes are expressed in cells, without altering the actual genetic code.

The products we use every day are potentially causing metabolic mayhem, regardless of diet & exercise, not only for us, but our unborn kids & grandkids.  It is even more important for women who want children to be aware of this when you consider that if you conceive a girl, the eggs that she will use to conceive her own children are developing when she’s still inside you!

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?
Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

Generation (Lyn)x

I remember the obsession with scented body sprays as a teen.  It’s an age when most people are acutely aware of their own body odor. With kids reaching puberty at an earlier age than ever before, they start using deodorant products earlier, which exposes them to endocrine disruptors for a longer period of their lives than any generation before them….right at a time of their life when there are significant hormonal changes already happening.  These chemicals are also neurotoxic & puberty is a time of significant changes in the brain, with the brain not considered fully developed until the early-mid 20’s.

I was recently helping my daughter with a costume change during a dance class.  We walked in to the bathroom where the girls were changing in the cubicles & I could hardly breathe.  They were spraying various deodorants on & I heard one of the girls say she had six different products in her bag!

It’s not just girls & women who love scented products.  Again during a dance class, a young man walked behind me as he entered the room & I immediately started sneeze-coughing.  I can only imagine how much cologne he’d sprayed on himself.  Now it’s no secret that teenage boys have a unique aroma all of their own, but they don’t realise that the very products they use to cover that aroma could be costing them their fertility or that of their children.

Thirty years ago, I wouldn’t have given a second thought to using these sorts of products, but knowing what I do now, I feel driven to get this message out.  I had the pleasure of meeting another Naturopath earlier this year at a business presentation & she shared a story about how she convinced her teenage grandson to ditch his popular brand of deodorant.  I re-tell the story in the video below:

Not only that, but think about when you go to the supermarket.  You KNOW when you’re in the cleaning products aisle, often an aisle or two before you get there.

For so long, we have associated these smells with ‘clean’, ‘fresh’ & ‘healthy’, but we now know the reality is far from that.

What you can do

These chemicals are insidious.  There’s probably nowhere left on the planet where you could completely avoid them.  What’s important is minimizing your exposure as much as you can through the choices you make:

  • Choose certified organic products when possible. They need to be free of synthetic chemicals as part of the certification process.  This is especially important for baby care products (this is a great range)
  • Choose unscented products, such as the deodorant in the video above
  • If you do want/need to use scented products, look for those which are lightly scented & use only pure essential oils
  • Make your own cleaning products without scents or use small amounts of essential oils. If DIY is not your thing, there’s a fantastic range of household cleaners here.
  • Replace regular perfumes with those made with essential oils, either blended yourself or pre-blended.
  • Avoid those products you don’t really NEED, such as fabric softener which are highly scented.
  • Ditch the plug-ins, room sprays & scented candles. If your house is in need of freshening up, the first step is improved ventilation, but there are safer products such as this & this.
  • Use bicarb to absorb smells from carpet & shoes instead of fragranced powders & sprays.
  • Download the Chemical Maze app to instantly identify dangerous cosmetic (and food) ingredients with ease
  • Download the Think Dirty app which looks at the ingredients of 550,000+ products from over 3,800 brands

I also highly recommend you listen to this podcast with Therese Kerr from The Divine Company.  Therese speaks passionately about this topic as it is her mission to educate our young people so they do not have to go through significant health challenges as she did.

There is also a brilliant 8 minute video here that covers this topic so well.

Some people are so shocked when they learn about the health consequences of fragranced products that they want to throw everything in the bin immediately.  If that’s not a viable option for you, just replace one thing at a time as you finish it.  The products that you’ll want to change first are those left in contact with your skin – deodorant, facial care, hand & body cream, make-up, sunscreen & laundry detergent (residue on clothes).

Comment below if you have any sensitivity to fragrances, of if you’ve noticed any changes in your health after switching to non-toxic products.

Also, please share this post with friends & family, especially those with existing health conditions or those planning on having children one day, to improve the health of future generations.
