I became a school Mum for the first time this year, after a decade of home education. My girls would get the occasional lurgy, but nothing could prepare me for the classroom cesspool 😳. To be fair, everyone is saying this is a really bad year for it (an unintended consequence of too much social distancing & sanitisation, perhaps?), but with my daughter missing half the school days so far, I wanted to get her something to support her innate immunity.

It arrived today, the same day I finally succumbed to laryngitis. Just a few rolls on pulse points & inhale.

At the start of 2021, the word that came through s

At the start of 2021, the word that came through strongly for me was 'change'. Last year had brought about many changes and challenges, but when this word came through, I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. I just knew life was going to look a lot different.

My eldest daughter, nearly 16yo, has always been homeschooled, following a natural learning/unschooling path. She has a few learning challenges with associated anxiety, but is thriving now by being able to follow her passions. It's beautiful to witness.

When my youngest, pictured here, reached school age, the decision was less obvious. She's an extrovert who loves doing maths and being around people all the time. She'd probably enjoy school, but then I was aware of the cons of institutionalised education. I was torn.

With the compounding grief of recent months, my cup has been empty. I haven't been present in my business and haven't been able to give this ball of energy all the attention she needs and deserves. Something had to give, so after wearing down the floorboards last week, today I took her to school for the first time. She was swept away by friends within moments of arriving so I'm sure she'll be fine. It will give her the mental stimulus she needs, and give me the time to refocus and prepare for the next stage of life.

I want to continue to help people to live a low-tox life, but just need a little more time until I can share value with you more consistently. I am always available via DM to answer any questions or help you source what you need. Finding solutions for you is what I thrive on!

Today though, I'm going to be kind to myself and practise the self-care that I preach. I've already enjoyed a hot mug of chocolaTEA with some much needed ashwagandha to support my adrenals and think some meditation is called for while the house is quiet, with an essential oil blend in the diffuser.

You know a meal is truly worth sharing with others when you get this far before realising you didn't take a photo in all its glory!

Thanks to @thewholecook , we enjoyed a delicious beef stew tonight that was absolutely delicious and all the things a good stew should be. I made a big batch of bone broth a couple of days ago in my Instant Pot, so have been using it in meals to help my gut. What you can't see here is meltingly tender beef and organic veggies in a nutritious broth, full of umami flavours. I had a little organic red wine left over from Christmas, so I added that, too. Like a warm hug on the inside! I'm going to say this was my favourite Instant Pot meal to date!

Of course, if you don't have an Instant Pot, you can still make this in the stovetop or in a regular slow cooker, but I had this ready in just over an hour and it tasted like it had been cooked all day. I'll pop a link in my bio to the Australian supplier if you'd like to know more about them.

I'm Nyree, a mid-40's unschooling mama to 15yo & 6yo girls, living in Tasmania, Australia.

After being sick a lot through childhood, I looked at the family 'cesspool' and knew there had to be a better way to health that didn't involve medications & side effects. I knew I wanted to help other families find a more natural way of living so they could improve the health of each generation to follow.

I had an overwhelming calling to study Naturopathy when I was 18. After qualifying, I ran a clinic in South Australia for a while, before moving interstate, where life took a few different tangents.

Fast-forward through years of fertility issues, adrenal exhaustion, weight reduction, parenting, homeschooling & healing, it was being hit hard by post-natal depletion 4 years ago that put me back on the path of not only looking after myself, but helping others to live healthy, low-tox lives. After all, around 85% of illness comes down to lifestyle choices, so regardless of our genetic makeup, we can influence how our genes express through the choices we make. That's why I particularly love working with couples before they conceive, to maximise the health of the next generation from the very start.

Tonight's dinner 🥰

As a hater of mayo, I don't usually eat potato salad, but came across this recipe recently from fellow shunner of mayonnaise, @oursaltykitchen which uses a basil vinaigrette instead. It is so freaking yummy, with well-balanced flavours, antioxidants and gut-loving prebiotics and resistant starch.

It's delicious on its own or as a side dish (and vegan-friendly for those so inclined), but tonight I added some hot-smoked salmon (which I only eat a couple of times a year max because it's farmed) and paired it with a chilled organic Pinot Gris. Perfection!

So, my last post about the roses. My Pop passed away 11.5 years ago, but I have been noticing his presence around a lot lately and have been receiving intuitive messages.

The roses he & Nanna used to grow were his pride & joy. They'd often send me home with a big bunch of scented blooms when I went to visit. The drive I had to cut roses from my own garden on the weekend was instant & strong. I also woke up a couple of days late last week with the Chattanooga Choo Choo on incessant repeat in my head. I knew it was from him.

This morning, I received a call from my sister to say my Nanna had just passed away. My Mum had been caring for Nanna for the last few years, but when Mum's body forced her to take a break recently (heart attack & stroke), Nanna was moved to respite care. I was tasked with showering her and packing her bags for what was just going to be a few days. I gave her a big hug and told her I loved her, knowing it may be the last chance to tell her.

Mum hadn't been able to visit Nanna due to the compulsory flu vaccine requirement for visitors to aged care. They were supposed to be picking up Nanna today to bring her home. She passed a few minutes before Mum got there 😭

Today, I remember a strong, loving woman who always made me feel safe. I remember back rubs and foot massages. I remember a graceful dancer and great cook (although the burnt roast duck one Christmas is etched in the family history book). It was an honour to care for you, Nanna, even though I know you struggled with the loss of dignity. Time to do the Foxtrot with Pop once again ❤️

Thursdays are busy days for us between our homeschooling/natural learning group and dance classes, so I wanted something I could take with us that everyone would eat. They offer a slightly different flavour to more advanced coriander, but are beautifully fresh and bursting with life-force energy as all sprouts are.

Coriander is a great heavy metal chelator and detoxifier, can ease digestive issues like IBS & excessive gas and may lower blood sugar levels and kill some parasites. Tonight, I enjoyed them on top of some teriyaki chicken & veg (gluten & soy-free thanks to the @niulife

Ah, birthdays. Anniversaries. A time of reflection of where we've come from & looking forward to all the future possibilities.

No, it's not my birthday personally, but today marks 4 years since I said "yes" to an opportunity and Unity Wellness was born.

I was a home schooling mum of a 2yo & 11yo, recovering from post-natal depletion that landed me in hospital, unable to control my convulsing body. Nutrition & self-care were more important than ever, but I was also feeling the financial stress of being a single-income household.

On the days when sleep has eluded me, I have work to do, coursework to do, parenting and home educating to do and I have to stay alert while driving (ie most days 😆), I'm grateful it only takes 5 mins to nourish my body with protein & good fats, reduce inflammation, balance hormones, support liver and gut health, restore collagen for better skin, hair, nails and joints and get that burst of energy that only comes from real, organic foods.
