More detox goodness with this Chicken & Veggie Soup. Once again, cooked in the Instant Pot & chock full of vitamins, prebiotic fibre to feed the good gut bugs, plus minerals & amino acids to repair the gut lining. It was actually a little too sweet for my tastes, with all the onion, leek, garlic, carrot & sweet potato, but a good dash of kelp salt balanced the flavours nicely.

Are you feeling 'blah & bloated' with everything that's been going on in recent months? Stress can have a significant impact on our gut & hormones, creating a vicious cycle that can leave you feeling even more exhausted and uncomfortable. Not only that, but indoor air can be many times more polluted than outdoor air, which is especially relevant with people spending more time indoors lately.

After tests from the doctor about a range of issues came back "normal" recently, I knew that gut health had to be a focus again. I had a number of options available, but decided on a 15-day cleanse program to support my liver, improve gut function & increase mineral levels. My teen has just started back at dance classes after 3 months off, so she decided to join me to boost her energy & help recovery from aching muscles.

We're on day 3 and to be honest, as a chronic under-eater (which ironically contributes to weight gain & gut issues), I'm finding it challenging to eat all the food. I know my body needs the nutrients though, and it will help me do more of the things that are important to me & my family.
I have to say, I think I like the berry chia pudding better than the vanilla one I usually make, and the chocolate liver cleanse drink ticks the box for protein within 30 minutes of waking which can be so helpful for women, especially those with post-natal depletion. The Veggie Patty recipe that comes with the program makes 4 large patties and I cooked the Chicken Ratatouille in my new Instant Pot rather than the oven. I'm still getting the hang of pressure cooking & liquid levels, so it was slightly more ratasoupy, but still delicious! All very yummy and the types of recipes the whole family can enjoy.

The only downside is we started the cleanse the same day my organic wine club order arrived 🙄😂 Winter is such a great time to do a cleanse or detox program, so if you want to shake off the quarantine funk but you don't know where to start, send me a message & I can help you find what's right for you 😊

Happy International Homebirth Day!

I'm a big advocate for women being able to choose the place they birth in and the people they invite into that space.

I had my eldest in hospital, primarily out of fear. I pondered the idea of a homebirth, but I'd never birthed at full-term before and we lived an hour away from the nearest hospital. My daughter was breech until I had an ECV at 37 weeks and I had been under close watch throughout the pregnancy due to possible cervical cancer. Although not stupid, I was not fully aware of my rights vs hospital policy and had interventions that in hindsight, were more detrimental than beneficial. Between that and not having much support in those early months of mothering, my mental health took a dive.

When I finally fell pregnant with my other daughter after years of fertility issues, I knew I wanted a different model of care. I employed a private midwife, had regular visits from her in our home & had my wishes respected. Just 2.5 hours of labour & my daughter was born in the middle of our house. I had flags with messages of support from friends hanging behind me and family in the room ♥️ I love that my eldest was there for cuddles and when the time came, I was able to climb into my own bed and sleep without distractions. All pretty perfect and no postnatal depression.

From religious ceremonies to sharing with family and friends, wine has been an integral part of many cultures for thousands of years, particularly through the Mediterranean region. Communities would come together at harvest time, crushing the grapes to release the juice, introducing bacteria & fungi into the mix which would start the fermentation process. They would then gather again to share food, share wine, share stories and be healthier for it.

There are a number of studies supporting the health benefits of antioxidants in wine such as resveratrol, found primarily in the skins of red grapes. The other part of the equation is the health benefits that come from socialising with people we enjoy spending time with. Social connection has been shown to impact our health more than any other factor - something that's been restricted for millions of people in recent months 😞

Not all wines are created equal, though. Some vineyards are heavily sprayed with herbicides, pesticides & fungicides, which inevitably find their way into the wine and into your gut. It's all about mass-production and profits. Conversely, grapes that are grown organically tend to be more flavoursome & higher in antioxidants because the vines have to create their own resilience to environmental stressors.

Sometimes change can feel overwhelming and we end up doing nothing due to 'analysis paralysis'. For people who aren't ready to just clear out the crap and start from scratch, or for those with budgetary constraints, I recommend just choosing one thing to swap out each week. You might use a new deodorant, or toothpaste, or lipstick, or shampoo, or perfume, or moisturiser. Maybe you buy the organic spinach instead of the regular type, or choose organic frozen berries over conventional ones. Maybe instead of checking your phone as soon as you wake up, you listen to a 10 minute meditation first or write in a gratitude journal. Maybe it's as simple as drinking an extra glass or two of water a day, adding a spoonful of fermented veg to a meal or walking an extra 5 minutes.

By making just one change a week, and sticking to it, that's over 50 changes that you'll make each year that will have you feeling so much better & will improve your health long-term.

Meet my garden buddy, Spock. I started suspecting a few weeks ago that "Lizzie" (named after his deceased biological mother, Elizabeth) was probably not going to be the right name 😏😂. He proved that recently when he found his voice...outside my bedroom window...early in the day.

He's down the bottom of the pecking order, but he knows who feeds him and can often be found wandering around inside the house if we leave the front door open. He likes walking around the garden with us and hanging out with our pet rabbit. Today, he "helped" me plant the lemon tree that I was given for Mother's Day LAST year 🍋. We really need to get him some female companions of the chicken variety, but until we do, you'll probably find him lurking outside my bedroom window 😂🐓 Feel free to share tales about your feathered or furry family members in the comments.

Thank you @kellygibney_wholehearted for creating my new favourite brownie recipe. They were a sensory delight from start to finish! I made a couple of substitutions with what I had in my pantry: hazelnut meal instead of almond meal, arrowroot flour instead of tapioca starch and pink Himalayan salt instead of salt flakes. Seriously, THE BEST!

Want to up your nutrition & reduce food waste? The freezer is your friend 😊

For example, if you're grating beetroot to make a chocolate beetroot cake (as I did recently for my daughter's birthday cake), put the leftover juice into an icecube tray, freeze it, then pop a couple of cubes into a smoothie to get this gorgeous cerise colour. Red beetroot has a particular affinity for the circulatory system, as well as being a great antioxidant & anti-inflammatory food.

You can do the same with any fruit of vegetable juice, or conversely, if making juice, either freeze or dehydrate the pulp to add to baking, soups, casseroles, etc. Vegetable and/or meat scraps can also be frozen and used to make stock. Anything we don't use goes to our pets or into the garden to rebuild the soil.

At the end of the day, disease is just that: dis-ease. It's usually a sign that things are out of balance in our bodies. Often, we ignore the subtle whispers. We're busy & don't have time to deal with minor inconveniences, or they become our 'normal' and easy to write off as "getting older". When those whispers are ignored, the body starts to scream louder & louder & louder until we can no longer ignore it.

When it comes to illness, there's 2 schools of thought. The first is germ theory, where it's said we get sick because of invasive pathogens. The second is the terrain theory: the condition of our body determines our susceptibility. If we look at COVID-19 for example, children are much more likely to be asymptomatic carriers of the virus, whereas the people suffering the most symptoms and who are the most likely to die are the elderly. Same virus, but the condition of the body & immune system - the terrain - produces different outcomes.

There are many things that can affect our immunity - diet/nutrition, exercise, stress, environmental toxins, water quality, medications, EMF exposure and much more. However, we actually have control over a lot of these things, as long as we're aware of them.

This is how I like to break-fast. Good fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, probiotics & a heap of prebiotic fibre. This helps gut health and supports the immune system heading into 'virus season'. My typical smoothie contains organic frozen mixed berries, organic apple, fresh lemon, coconut yoghurt, coconut water, chia seeds, hemp seeds, psyllium powder, moringa, greens powder, matcha powder and a fermented hemp protein & seed mix. Sometimes I'll add a bit of zucchini, baby spinach or marine collagen powder. Yummy!

When it comes to nutrition, our food isn't what it used to be. Our soils used to be rich in minerals & microbes, but industrial farming methods have depleted both, meaning there's less vitamins & minerals in our foods. To get the same levels of nutrients that our parents, grandparents & great-grandparents got from their diet, we need to be eating several times more food than they did. One study concluded that you would have to eat 8 oranges today to derive the same amount of nutrition as our grandparents would have gotten from one.

It's a scary thought, isn't it?
I actually posted an article on the Unity Wellness Facebook page earlier today about bowel cancer and the link to gut microbes. They've found that certain strains of E.coli release a toxin that affects DNA synthesis in the cells of the bowel, so the new cells don't behave quite the way they should. Over time, the DNA is progressively altered to the point the cells become cancerous.

They said that even some strains of E.coli that are used therapeutically to treat conditions such as IBS can release this toxin, so the short term benefit may be outweighed by long term risk.
There are different ways probiotics can be made. I use fermented organic food products over dairy or faecal-based probiotics, but this article does make me question the use of faecal transplants which have been increasingly used over the years in an attempt to re-balance the gut microbiome.
It's not just bowel cancer in older people pushing up cancer rates, though. Cancer is now the leading cause of death in childhood. Our entire immune system relies on good gut function and our children are being exposed to environmental factors that can affect that even before they're born.

Aren't they purdy? Our first homegrown zukes 😁

Considering they are one of the few vegetables my body likes, I'm amazed I hadn't grown any sooner, particularly when conventionally-grown zucchini can be high in pesticides and organic/spray-free ones aren't always readily available.
I'd been waiting for circumstances to be "just right" - waiting to have the perfect raised beds with the perfect growing medium. My 5yo wanted these seedlings when we were walking through the hardware store, but I had no idea where we'd actually plant them. Once we got them home, the snails wanted them, too. There was so little stalk left on them that I had no idea if they'd even survive. Rather than wait for the ideal scenario I had in my head, I picked a spot where our rabbit cage had been (little grass left & pre-fertilised), threw down some left over potting mix & compost, covered it with old cardboard boxes and topped it with a mulch enriched with chicken manure & good bacteria and a little bit of sugar cane mulch that was left over from previous plantings.

It's been a really good lesson in not waiting until everything is perfect. Take what action you can with the resources you have right now and watch things blossom & grow. Feeling grateful for the abundance 🙏

This lot are destined to become zucchini fritters, plus I have zucchini soup on the stove with zucchinis that were gifted to us by friends last week. I'm going to try fermenting some, too.

The first of our Summer fruit harvest. Well, my husband did pick some cherries at Christmas in an attempt to get some before the birds ate them all, but they really weren't ripe enough to eat 😣🍒 so this is the first edible harvest 😆

I was going to make some plum sauce with this lot, but they seem to have mostly evaporated from the fruit bowl overnight 🙄. It's going to be another bumper season for the blackberries, though. You really have to admire their tenacity in spite of my attempts at serious culling in recent months!

I really love being able to walk out into the garden to pick fresh, organically-grown food, full of vitality & nutrients. I'm especially excited for the zucchinis that will be ready in the next day or two!
