Last year, I met Don 'The Gut Man' Chisholm & heard his story of overcoming several health challenges, including being diagnosed with terminal cancer 22 years ago. Aren't they purdy? Our first homegrown zukes 😁

Considering they are one of the few vegetables my body likes, I'm amazed I hadn't grown any sooner, particularly when conventionally-grown zucchini can be high in pesticides and organic/spray-free ones aren't always readily available.
I'd been waiting for circumstances to be "just right" - waiting to have the perfect raised beds with the perfect growing medium. My 5yo wanted these seedlings when we were walking through the hardware store, but I had no idea where we'd actually plant them. Once we got them home, the snails wanted them, too. There was so little stalk left on them that I had no idea if they'd even survive. Rather than wait for the ideal scenario I had in my head, I picked a spot where our rabbit cage had been (little grass left & pre-fertilised), threw down some left over potting mix & compost, covered it with old cardboard boxes and topped it with a mulch enriched with chicken manure & good bacteria and a little bit of sugar cane mulch that was left over from previous plantings.

It's been a really good lesson in not waiting until everything is perfect. Take what action you can with the resources you have right now and watch things blossom & grow. Feeling grateful for the abundance 🙏

This lot are destined to become zucchini fritters, plus I have zucchini soup on the stove with zucchinis that were gifted to us by friends last week. I'm going to try fermenting some, too.

The first of our Summer fruit harvest. Well, my husband did pick some cherries at Christmas in an attempt to get some before the birds ate them all, but they really weren't ripe enough to eat 😣🍒 so this is the first edible harvest 😆

I was going to make some plum sauce with this lot, but they seem to have mostly evaporated from the fruit bowl overnight 🙄. It's going to be another bumper season for the blackberries, though. You really have to admire their tenacity in spite of my attempts at serious culling in recent months!

I really love being able to walk out into the garden to pick fresh, organically-grown food, full of vitality & nutrients. I'm especially excited for the zucchinis that will be ready in the next day or two!

About 18 months ago, my daughter made this yummy matcha icecream. I was thinking about it today when reading an article that mentioned matcha, so I finally got around to asking her for the recipe she used. Turns out it's amazingly simple!

2 cans full-fat coconut milk
1-2Tbsp matcha powder
1/2c maple syrup

Blend everything in a high-powered blender until smooth, then use an icecream churn to start the freezing process. Serve soft straight from the machine, or freeze for a further 2-3 hours of you want to be able to scoop it. Thanks to Julia at @theroastedroot for this recipe 👍

We've got some warm weather coming up in the next week, so I'm going to grab some more coconut milk & make another batch. My daughter used plain matcha powder, but I'm going to try it with a Matcha & Mint blend I have here that also contains alfalfa, mesquite and vanilla. Just as easy, but extra yumminess & nutrition.

This photo came up on Facebook memories a couple of days ago, and I remember how good it felt to fit into a dress that I'd been hoarding for years. In 3.5 months, I'd released nearly 30kg (66lbs) of weight that I'd carried since childhood, but that had gotten so much worse with hormonal changes & sleep deprivation following the birth of my daughter. That journey was also part of the healing process that allowed me to conceive my second child

At last, the inflammation was gone and when I looked in the mirror, the way I looked on the outside finally matched how I felt on the inside. Such a great feeling! .

Argh, falling behind again, but once again, this photo combines two themes.

Being school holidays, I see lots of work-at-home parents saying they're struggling to get anything done because of the kids wanting to spend time with them. For me, this is the daily norm.

I wanted to be a Mum from the time I was 13yo. When I was 18, I had a strong calling to study Naturopathy because I didn't want my kids or anyone elses kids to have the same struggles with their health that I'd had. I knew that by overcoming certain challenges, I could help others to do the same.
Being totally honest, I love my girls & they are my inspiration. I am so thankful I was able to overcome fertility issues and bring two beautiful souls Earthside. However, I know that I'm here for more. To help more people. To be a change-maker. I thrive on finding answers to people's questions. Trying to do that when you are a child's everything can be hard. She's my shadow, always with me, craving connection. I have realised that I can't be all the things, to all the people, all the time.

While I don't always show up consistently, I am here. I am here to answer your questions. Here to guide you through the greenwashing minefield. Here to help you prepare your body before having a baby. Here to help you release excess weight. Here to help you address skin and gut issues. Here to offset the effects of stress and aging so you can have the energy to pursue what you love to do. Here to share the businesses doing the right thing by people and planet. Water. 75% of the Earth's surface is covered by it, but only around 1% of all the water is drinkable. This same water has been recycled for millions of years.
Now think about 7 billion humans and countless other species using this water. Think about the amount of herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers, heavy metals, plastics, pharmaceutical residues, radioactive particles and other toxins that have been pumped into waterways over at least the last hundred years. Then there's the creosote and chemicals falling into the rivers, dams & lakes from smoke from massive bushfires, along with domestic heating and cooking. There's barely a drop of water on the planet that's not polluted in some way 😢

DDT has been found in the breastmilk of women in a remote area of New Guinea, 2000km from agricultural areas & 2000m above sea level. Animal extinction rates are higher in areas of "fresh" water. Entire townships are drying up completely and what fresh water we have left is being sold off by Governments to Corporate interests to further pollute. In NSW alone, the State Govt warns they may not be able to provide clean water because of the fires.

As Dr Marc Cohen says, we can either use a filter or be one. While our bodies are 70% water by volume, we're actually 99% water on a molecular level, so the quality of water we drink & bathe in can massively impact our health. It's why I believe a good water filter is pretty much essential these days.

A few days ago, a friend posted a comparison shot from Canberra, showing smoke filling the air one day & then blue skies a few days later, saying "you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" (if you're anything like me, you just sang that). When we had fires in our area last year, it was the smoke that really affected me as I couldn't take deep breaths & calm my nervous system. Although we don't have fires nearby, we have had smoke from fires further North in Tassie, as well as the fires on the mainland. Today is one of the clearest days we've had in a while & I'm so thankful. The sky is blue, the hills are green and the birds are singing all around.

Air quality can have such a profound affect on our health. In Mexico City, one of the places with the worst air quality in the world, children are been diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia, a disease that usually affects the elderly. Children of women who smoke during pregnancy tend to have lower birth weights, but then have a 50% increased risk of obesity in adulthood. There's so many more issues that I don't have the space to list here.

If you are living in a place with poor air quality, 🌿 investing in an air purifier with a HEPA filter is a great idea (although stores tend to sell out of stock quickly during major fires)
🌿 to offset some of the damage, take high doses of vitamin C as well as other antioxidants
🌿 House plants can absorb air pollutants, so create an indoor jungle
🌿 There's also a couple of certified organic essential oil brands I use with great blends for respiratory issues, and the negative ions created by some diffusers can help to purify the air.

To all those currently in the thick of it, I feel so deeply for you. If you are able to get away from the smoke, even for a while, please do so....and know that although it feels like it will never end, you will see blue skies again 💗

Today's theme is "eye candy", but to me, nothing looks better right now than rain falling. Waking up to this precious sound and sight today took me to a place of immense gratitude 🌧️🙏 I have been joining with others in group visualisations, imagining rain falling across our burning continent, seeing everything as green & lush and imagining animals living peacefully. I know many people scoff at "hopes and prayers", especially when their immediate reality seems so far removed from the intention, but these energetic shifts are measurable (Gregg Braden talks more about this). And quite frankly, we're at a place in history when massive physical action AND reconnecting to the energies around us will be needed if we are to continue to exist on this planet.

In the last week, since the world-wide intention sessions, there has been rain falling across the country. Clearly no where near enough, but it's a start. I just hope that the front passing over Tasmania, Victoria & possibly Southern NSW makes some difference to those who need it most (swipe to see the radar pic). I invite you to spend some time looking at this "eye candy". To see the beauty. To see this happening right across the country. To imagine the people in drought & fire affected areas dancing in the rain as it falls. To feel their pure joy. To see rivers flowing, dams filling, new life springing from charred remains. To see politicians truly acting in the best interests of the people. This is eye candy for the soul, not the ego. See it all, then also look at what you can do to help those affected or what changes you can make yourself for a cleaner planet 💗

Well, I'm already falling behind this #fmspad photo-a-day challenge 😆, so here's two days combined, with the themes "outside" and "things I enjoy..." as these are not mutually exclusive.

We have 2.5 acres of largely unutilised land, but I want to make much better use of it to feed our family, as well as those in need as we face environmental challenges. I've also been decluttering & getting rid of years worth of paper and cardboard I no longer need. Rather than putting it all in the recycling bin, where it may not even end up being recycled, I've been using the paper & cardboard as a biodegradable weed mat, over top of compost and manure but underneath the mulch. I experimented with an area of lawn about 1sq metre where our rabbit hutch had been and planted it with some veggie seedlings that were looking a bit sad. We now have some very happy plants that will provide us with organic veg over the next few months. I can't wait to do this on a larger scale! (Except the blackberries which seriously need culling 😬). It's proof of what's possible with minimal resources and it's also got the family out into the garden as they excitedly check the progress each day.

I've also been revitalising the fur baby memorial garden using locally-sourced house manure, cardboard, paper & some woodchip mulch we picked up for free (thanks Facebook Marketplace!). My dodgy back is screaming at me, but my heart is full, seeing these plants thriving and knowing that I'm doing something positive for people & planet 💗

I remember this moment fondly. Sitting on the verandah at home, the warm sun penetrating my blossoming belly.

You see, I never knew if I'd get this moment again. I'd miscarried my first pregnancy at 9 weeks, then had my daughter nearly 15 years ago, just before I turned 31. We'd always planned on 2 children, but it wasn't happening. The few times I did fall pregnant over the next several years resulted in early losses. Whilst I was grateful for my daughter, I was devastated that I couldn't provide her with a much longed-for sibling. In late 2012, I decided it was time to focus on my health more than ever. It took another year of lifestyle tweaks, but a few weeks after turning 40, I had a beautiful blessingway and birthed my second daughter at home as planned.

Although I'd lived a relatively low-tox life since my 20's, first-borns tend to cop the biggest burden of chemical toxicity. A really effective way for a woman to detox is to get pregnant and there are challenges that my eldest faces that my youngest does not. Our body stores excess toxins in fat cells to keep our organs safe, then we use those fat cells for energy & later, milk production, releasing the stored toxins in the process. Babies are being born pre-polluted with at least 287 man-made chemicals that are in our environment, the food we eat, the water we drink, the clothes we wear & the products we use every day. That's just the ones that were tested for. There's likely thousands more according to Dr Marc Cohen.

If you are thinking of having a baby, then making some positive changes and preparing your body at least 4 months ahead of conception is really important to maximise your chances of a healthy pregnancy & child (that goes for the father-to-be too!). With infertility, birth defects & childhood health issues on the rise, this year I really want to help parents-to-be (whether your first time or fifth) to make conscious choices, so please reach out if you need some guidance 💗🤰👶

Hello yarrow! 🌼 One plant that helps both issues 😁. It's a great balancing herb, with a special affinity for the blood. It stops the flow when there's too much & gets it moving when it's stagnant. It's also good for urinary tract infections & kills gram-positive bacteria on contact, so it's really helpful for wound healing.

The small person & I walked around our property yesterday and harvested some leaves which I've dried out to make yarrow tea & yarrow powder, so we always have some on hand. When the flower heads bloom soon, I'll harvest some to make a tincture. So thankful for this wonderful plant panacea 🥰

This may just be the best fudge ever! Rich, smooth, no GMO corn syrup, simply DIVINE!!! Melt together 2c dark chocolate, 1 can sweetened condensed coconut milk, 3T coconut oil & a pinch of salt (I also added a dash of vanilla). Pour into a lined loaf pan, sprinkle with more salt & freeze.

I used the (soy free) dark couverture chocolate and Tasmanian sea salt from @unpackedbulkwholefoods , Pandaroo canned condensed coconut milk (although it's super easy to make your own if you have a Thermomix or similar) and my favourite organic coconut oil from @naturalrawc . Thanks to Alison @naturaltastychef for the recipe 🥰.

This would be a great base recipe for different fudge types. If you're not vegan, make it with milk chocolate instead. Use white chocolate and add chopped macadamias (and maybe some wattle seed if you want some extra crunch). Use the dark choc but add chopped roasted hazelnuts & a splash of Frangelico. Add some freeze-dried berries. So many ideas & they'd make great gifts for Christmas 🎄

A beautiful Spring afternoon in the garden. It's going to be a productive year in the orchard if we can get to the apricots, cherries, pears, apples & plums before the birds do. We also got some friends for our old chook yesterday. She hasn't been around a rooster before, so that was a whole new experience for her 😳. It's estimated that in just 10 years from now, Australians will produce enough textile waste to cover the surface of the continent. Globally, one truck full of textile waste is dumped in landfill or burnt EVERY SECOND! That's crazy when you consider that 95% of that could be recycled.
We buy pre-loved clothing as much as possible, but having growing children and dance costumes to buy, we do have much more to dispose of than I would like. I've particularly noticed a growing collection of socks that are way beyond repair, and there's only so many plant ties we need, so I was excited to see the @manrags #startwithsocks initiative pop up on my IG feed.
For $2 and a few minutes of your time, you can send them 500g of clean used socks to be upcycled if in good condition or recycled into other textiles. You'll then get a $20 credit to use in their store. While it's not a perfect solution, it's a step (no pun intended) in the right direction. 😊🧦
